Life Lessons Learnt From My First Working Month

Last month I began to work for a company in Milan. I’m a customer consultant who daily speaks and writes in three languages in the big city centre.

Most of my colleagues are younger than me, and even though we are all multilingual, we all have different backgrounds.

Currently I am testing my balance through my new life: reading on the train, and/or on weekends, writing few words at night, finding topics for my articles at 8 a.m., and working the whole day. This means that one of the first feelings I had to face was to feel overwhelmed.

To deal with this feeling, I’ve started remembering myself what I usually do in challenging situations: I take small steps, one at a time, and I go on. Of course, I got some inspiration by few Medium articles I managed to read, motivational posts on social networks and the book I’m currently reading (I’ll write an article about this famous book).

So every day I think about the things I want to do at night and I do them. If I want to do several things during the week but I fear to forget them, I write them down on my organizer. Basically I write e-mails for my company, I write my stuff down, I write articles…my world is full of words, am I therefore a writer?

I also learnt to ask for help when I need it. As a matter of fact, as a newcomer I have to learn a lot from my colleagues, and asking them about issues and doubts is helping me a lot. This means that I have to listen carefully to the suggestions I have been provided, but also listen to the customers that call on the phone.

If a task tends to repeat, then I write it down as well…told you, I write everything down.

Another useful thing I’m experiencing concerns teamworking. We all communicate each other, even when someone works from home. Not only for doubts or suggestions, but also to share thoughts on a specific situation. We help each other when a colleague needs support and this is simply great.

Working every day 9 to 18 has been helping me to face the two recent losses that my family unfortunately experienced.

Even though I am often tired and I spend most of the day working, I am grateful for this job experience. It has been teaching me a lot so far.
