Stop Believing “I can’t do it!”
I started working in my company at the end of March. So far, I’ve learnt a lot of things, but surely I’m not going to call myself an expert. Anyway, I work in the customer service field and I spent the first couple of weeks anwering to e-mails with my colleagues, knowing that THAT moment was going to come very soon.
What was THAT moment? Well, the moment I had to start answering the phone and reply to customers’ inquiries.
I was really scared, even though I love speaking foreign languages with people. I saw my colleagues answering the phone in such a professional and easy way that I thought: “How will I be able to do it?”. But the moment arrived.
The first couple of days I was nervous, but then I started gaining more confidence in myself. The last two weeks I had to work from home, which means that nobody could help me when I was not sure of some information, so I’ve learnt how to handle this situation.
When I think about last month, it’s still almost incredible to me that I can really do what I do. And this perfectly suits with two quotes that I read in Michael Thompson article: “How to Wake Up Smiling: The 9 Decisions That Led To A Life I Love”. The author says:
“Confidence does not only come from getting things right. Confidence comes from trying, and I am proud of the fact that at least I decided to become a ‘trier.’”
I am proud I tried. I am proud I’m still doing and trying it every day. And so I discovered, once again, that I am able to do something if I keep consistent:
‘“One of the greatest discoveries a man makes, one of his great surprises, is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn’t do.’ — Henry Ford”
So why am I telling you my experience? Because I feel my mission, aka the narrative thread of my life, is to empower people, and I’d like to do it by writing. Writing may touch people’s heart if you’re doing it right. I know what if feels to be underestimated by some fellows who should actually do the opposite, and I know I discouraged myself sometimes, too.
If you do think that you’re not going to go very far with your ideas, if you think you cannot at least try, if you listen to others’ judgements…please, don’t do it again. Our mind believes that our convinctions are true, so if you convince yourself you are not able to do something, you will believe it one day.
If you think that a goal is too big too achieve, ask yourself first: AM I MOTIVATED TO DO IT? AM I SEEKING FOR EXCUSES?
And then divide your goal in few small steps: what can you do right now to start your achievement path? And take that first step. What can I do tomorrow that will help me in future towards my goal? And take the second step. If you go on this way, you will realise that a step forward is one step less to achieve the peak of your mountain.
Think big (your achievement) but start small (your first steps).
Focusing on your big goal may motivate you, but if it requires a lot of time and effort, you may feel discouraged. Keep in mind it, but focus on the path to reach it, little by little.
